When Henry Miller was recorded, did he know that the second half of conversation was recorded, too? He says something about the recording session already being over. He then starts into an improvised slam/speech prophecy about the future of media and the death of print.
It sounds spontaneous.
It sounds like a long, bitter standup routine,
with no response from an audience. Is he speaking to someone, an interviewer? Or, is he speaking by himself.

as you're reading into the microphone, you’re recording over another speech.... It's the most contradictory thing, don't you see

(As opposed to printed words, which can be destroyed apiece, but never entirely; as is possible with a single audio copy, never backed up. In essence, however, a lone written transcript, destroyed on its way to the publisher or the printer, could be analogous to the unbacked-up audio.)

March 5, 2006: I find the mother, finally, in the dream.
I’ve been looking for her, during the last week’s dreams.
I grabbed onto her; twining my arms and legs with hers, so that she cannot flee from me.

For a moment, so short, she grips me back.

She does not struggle; but she does leave my grasp, pointing towards the horizon. Her face and body grow younger, and whole. She leaves me... as a child; her face, also, turning to blazing light; becoming unrecognizable, to us.

She then flies toward the sun; the middle sun on the horizon, avoiding the false stars, homing in on the true reward. She is gone towards the correct place and I am left to repent. We are left with living and I am left with tears, small victories and regret. I watch her fly away, threading a path between the monsters and the monoliths...
“Mom?...”

THE BUTCHER’S DAUGHTER

The butcher’s daughter was the cutest lady I’d ever known.
But... she was another man’s wife, some child’s mom and another generation.

I met her doppleganger, once; deep in the culverts of Minneapolis.
I sang her to my house and deep-fried baby trouts for her, which she ate like flaming popcorn.
She only stayed three days, but promised to meet me again...

Only later... did I begin to remember.

I washed her hair, once; in the torrent of a glacial waterfall.
The ice was two kilometres high and had just finished grinding up all the fossils in Northwestern Ontario.
We dried ourselves on a fresh, sterile esker; then, dined on frozen mammoth, sticking out of the ice-wall.
Mammoth tastes like freezer burn.

I rode in a trireme with her, some time ago.
I brought plague to her city, but she loved me. She smuggled me inside the walls and 60% of the adults died, in the next three months.
Children were immune.

I speared the last Sasquatch for her; she rewarded me with her favours, after we feasted.
The trees surrounded us, glaring in disapproval; horrified.
The fire was two stories high, in sixty-foot wide clearing.

The grass was thick, soft and soothing-green.
Sasquatch tastes like thylacine.

The butcher’s daughter was the cutest lady I’d ever known... But; she was another man’s wife, some child’s mom and social aberration..

I took the painted rocks lining the driveway of abandoned summer lodges (quite cheerful once the dirt of decade’s neglect is washed off) and made her a necklace.
It was linked with 1 Gauge, welded, high-carbon steel.
It weighed more than that ol’ mammoth and all his parasites put together.
She only wore it once...
There went another summer.

I escorted her down the street, one afternoon:
she wore a plaid catholic-school uniform mini skirt.
Her face... painted white; she wore purple black lipstick and flaming eyeshadow.
She looked molten hot.
I couldn’t compete with that, but...

I wore my most obnoxiously cheerful tie-dye t-shirt and the largest plastic beads I’d stolen from someone else’s Mardi-Gras collection.

We were thousands of years old and she still made me nervous... distracted; overjoyed to be alive.

The stares of men were full of wonder, then HATE.

After washing off the grease of last night’s labours, my hands feel curiously tacky.
It is, as if, they’ve been stripped of a smooth and frictionless sheen.

The water is cold, cold, cold... in the shop tonight.
There is no hot water.
It’s freezing... but, feels like life, itself, pouring out of the tap.
I’ve been working on her monument all night and there is granite dust, ozone...
blood and soot in my hair, my teeth.

I want to believe
we’ll meet again.

The butcher’s daughter was the cutest lady I’d ever known... But; she was another man’s wife, some child’s mom and my heart's lamentation.

I’ve heard about a ship to the underworld, owned by a guide who works for meat.
The blood on my knuckles; my down payment.

I think they’re using it for an operating room.

Narrator: Nurse:
Nurse: I can’t find her pulse, doctor.

Narrator: Doctor Benway looks around... then picks up one of those rubber vacuum cups... at the end of a stick they use to (garbled edit) ...nces on the patient.

Benway: “Make an incision, Dr. Lymph!”
Narrator he says, to his appalled assistant,
Benway: “... I’m goinna massage the heart!”

(audience chuckles)
Narrator: Doctor Lymph shrugs and begins the incision. Dr. Benway washes the suction cup by swishing it around in the toilet bowl.

Narrator: Nurse:
Nurse: Shouldn’t it be sterilised, doctor?

Benway: Very likely...
But there’s no time! Mmmphh. Huhh, hgh.

Narrator: He sits on the suction cup, like a cane seat, watching his assistant make the incision.

Benway: You young squirts couldn’t lance a pimple without an electric vibrating skappel,
with automatic drain and suture.
Soon we’ll be operating by remote control, on patients we never see...
We’ll be nothing but button-pushers.

All the skill is going out of surgery,
all the “know-how” and “make-do”.

Did I ever tell you about the time I performed an appendectomy with a rusty sardine can?
(audience chuckles)
Once: I was cort short...
without instrument one, and removed an ooterine tumour with my teeth...
(audience chuckles)
uhhhh...
That was in the Upper Effendi... aaand besides.

Dr. Lymph: The incision is ready, doctor.

Narrator: Dr. Benway forces the cup into the incision,
works it up and down.

Blood spurts all over the doctors, the nurse
and the wall...

The cup makes a horrible sucking sound.

Nurse: I think she’s gaawwn, doctor.

Narrator: Dr. Benway:
Benway: Well it’s all inna day’s work.

Narrator: He walks across the room to a medicine cabinet.

Dr. Benway: Some fucking drug addict’s cut my cocaine with Sannee-Flush!...

Nurse!
Send the boy out to fill this RX, on the double!

Thunder Bay riding goes liberal

The dingbat voters of my riding have given birth to a lame duck. If we had gotten the NDP candidate elected, here, at least we would have had some leverage, but we went with the losing team. (35+% vs. 33+%, in the riding.)

This is particularly galling, because the Rainy River area is a traditional NDP stronghold that was shoehorned into the Thunder Bay riding in a blatant case of Liberal gerrymandering some years ago.

PS Conservatives suck, too. If Mr. Harper starts tripping down to Washington to kiss ass and lick boot, then I hope every who voted for this shlub realizes that "getting the Grits out" does not have to include sticking your tongue in a light socket.

Mr. Rogers said he asked Vancouver-based Citizens Bank of Canada several times to end the practice, because U.S. authorities could potentially gain access to his personal information under the wide-ranging Patriot Act, a piece of legislation designed to crack down on terrorism."

Of course, the bank is refusing to stop this practice. The story goes on to say that much of Canada's credit card holders accounts are processed in the USA. Fellow Canadians: Is you're money and your financial records subject to the Patriot Act?

There is a Rash of sunburn in the cafe tonight;
many white folk in praise of Father Sol

I sweat, uselessly, against the wall.
It is not sexy;
as sweat on TV is...
It’s not EROTIC, like sweat on the big screen.

My sweat is pointless; a nuisance at best
and it’s not even summer, yet.

Dying tonight would save me... alotta time... alotta boredom
but I’m more coward than bravo
more snake then cougar.
And for that...
I shall:

This is my first post with "audioblogger", a reading of this poem:

Even though I’ve showered and washed and I know it’s not possible...
The scent of you still lingers deep in my skin.
Will I fall in love with every woman I ever see, meet, kiss and sleep with
I don’t think so, but I fall in love with most of them.

The wonders hidden under flowing dresses, jeans and
t-shirts make me crazy.
I see...
I see flesh everywhere.
It’s your mind kept hidden, as is mine.

Flesh
Flesh
Flesh... It is the trinity of my misery and my ecstasy.
Your mind is my salvation.

You came hard and fast last night,

an’ I am happy for you.
But in retrospect...
I should have drawn it out a bit longer.
I don’t remember coming at all.

Tonight, I’m only one of several people
sitting around the cafe, writing.
Writing final assignments, bad poetry, ideas, notes,
prose, letters and who gives a fuckwut.
I’ve seen at least three women here that I seriously desire,
but don’t have the stomach or the courage to do anything about it.

Out the window
angels piss, coldly, laughing...
Give cleansing to our dirty little streets;
no malice.

They take delight in my muttering:
-mutter to the wind; harmless chill blowing around me, respecting my heat and blank stare.
-mutter to the trees; swaying wet, dancing in their dream to a quiet music that was once a roar in my ears.
-mutter to the sidewalk, who loves me and only leaves me when I need to be alone.
But she’s almost always there.

People are laughing somewhere.
The couple approaches and appears happy
so I smile for them.
A car drives by and splashes them;
that makes me grin hard.

Ahhhh...
A little bitter, maybe.

We are all so wounded in our little pains tonight.
Laughter and smiles hide us all.
-You; writhing in the guilt of a love, despoiled.
-You; shrinking from the memory of your father’s
beatings and grampa’s clammy hands.
-You; gorging and drinking and sucking and smoking
and never filling the void.
-You; praying, kneeling, talking and quoting and never
quite believing.
-And you; in your truth, honesty, compassion and hard
work...
still sucking shit through an old straw.

Find your mercy.
Take it and wrestle it to your crotch and your heart.
Breathe it. Hug it. Drink it. Shoot it.
Scrape the crumbs off the bottom of a dumpster;
put ‘em in a jar and fuck it...
Savour it.

I’ve found tiny mercies for my small pain:
-in crotch ass and breast.
-in bottle, pipe and pill.
-in tree, river... stone.
-in heart; blood and meat.
-in bass. Treble. Beat.
-in word, phrase and tome.
-in tent or ditch... home.
But find peace only in sleep... sleep

I wander to my bed, her bed, his floor, your door:
Mutter to her memory, mutter to myself, mutter to the
wind, mutter to the trees, mutter to your breast.
I mutter to the beast.
“I want to sleep... I want to sleep.
I want to sleep.”

Up in the woods, north of Emo, Ontario, there lived a hermit who grew crazier and crazier while trying to make sense of god and the world. He proceeded to document his formulae and theories for the education of his neighbours and passers-by. In future posts I will explore the writings of the "Oracle of Lampi Road".
